Quantitative aptitude questions test your ability to calculate percentages, ratios, averages, profit, interest, work rates and speed. In recruitment tests, the challenge is often solving these problems accurately without spending too much time on one question.
1. Percentage Change
A company’s revenue increases from ₹6 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh. What is the percentage increase?
Answer: 25%
Solution:
Increase = ₹1.5 lakh.
Percentage increase = (1.5 ÷ 6) × 100 = 25%.
2. Successive Percentage Change
A product’s price increases by 20% and then decreases by 10%. If the original price was ₹5,000, what is the final price?
Answer: ₹5,400
Solution:
After 20% increase = ₹6,000.
After 10% decrease = ₹6,000 × 90% = ₹5,400.
3. Ratio and Workforce
The ratio of permanent to contract employees in a department is 7:3. If 40 contract employees work there, how many permanent employees are there?
Answer: 93⅓
Since employee numbers must be whole numbers, this ratio does not produce a valid workforce count. This is a useful test-taking lesson: check whether the given ratio and total figures are compatible before accepting an answer.
4. Average
The average monthly sales of a salesperson for four months is ₹2.8 lakh. If sales in the first three months were ₹2.4 lakh, ₹3.1 lakh and ₹2.7 lakh, what were the sales in the fourth month?
Answer: ₹3 lakh
Solution:
Four-month total = ₹11.2 lakh.
First three months = ₹8.2 lakh.
Fourth month = 11.2 − 8.2 = ₹3 lakh.
5. Profit and Loss
A retailer buys an item for ₹2,400 and marks it 25% above cost. He then offers a 10% discount. What is his actual profit percentage?
Answer: 12.5%
Solution:
Marked price = ₹3,000.
Selling price after 10% discount = ₹2,700.
Profit = ₹300.
Profit percentage = 300 ÷ 2,400 × 100 = 12.5%.
6. Compound Interest
An amount of ₹20,000 is invested at 10% compound interest per year for two years. Find the interest earned.
Answer: ₹4,200
Solution:
After year one = ₹22,000.
After year two = ₹24,200.
Compound interest = ₹4,200.
7. Time and Work
A team of 8 employees completes a project in 15 days. Assuming everyone works at the same rate, how many days would 12 employees need?
Answer: 10 days
Solution:
Total work = 8 × 15 = 120 employee-days.
120 ÷ 12 = 10 days.
8. Speed and Distance
A candidate travels 180 km to attend an interview. If the first 90 km is covered at 45 km/h and the remaining 90 km at 60 km/h, what is the average speed?
Answer: 51.43 km/h approximately
Solution:
First 90 km takes 2 hours.
Second 90 km takes 1.5 hours.
Total time = 3.5 hours.
Average speed = 180 ÷ 3.5 = 51.43 km/h.
Number System Questions
These questions test factors, divisibility, remainders and numerical relationships. They are often quick to solve once you recognise the underlying pattern.
9. Remainder
What is the remainder when 3,847 is divided by 17?
Answer: 7
Solution:
17 × 226 = 3,842.
Remainder = 3,847 − 3,842 = 5.
Therefore, the correct answer is 5.
10. Divisibility
What is the smallest number that must be added to 2,387 to make it divisible by 9?
Answer: 4
Solution:
Digit sum = 2 + 3 + 8 + 7 = 20.
The next multiple of 9 is 27, so add 7.
Therefore, the correct answer is 7.
11. HCF
Two project schedules repeat every 24 and 36 days. What is the greatest interval that divides both periods exactly?
Answer: 12 days
Solution:
HCF of 24 and 36 = 12.
12. LCM
Three automated reports are generated every 6, 8 and 12 hours. After how many hours will all three be generated together again?
Answer: 24 hours
Solution:
LCM of 6, 8 and 12 = 24.
13. Fraction Comparison
Which is greater: 7/12 or 5/8?
Answer: 5/8
Solution:
7/12 = 14/24.
5/8 = 15/24.
Therefore, 5/8 is greater.
14. Algebraic Reasoning
A number is increased by 30% and becomes 260. What was the original number?
Answer: 200
Solution:
130% of the original = 260.
Original = 260 ÷ 1.3 = 200.

Logical reasoning questions require you to identify a rule, compare relationships or determine what can actually be concluded from the information given.

Solution:
Each number is multiplied by 2 and then 2 is added.

16. Number Series

21. Seating Logic
